September update

So school is back in for the fall. And we’re starting back on the tutoring. Get in touch if you’re interested, the schedule is starting to fill up.

Some educational events we’re helping with this month:

And more in October:

  • Oct 14-18 – Organizing For Justice conference
  • Oct 25-31 – Indigenous Sovereignty Week (looks like we’ll be doing visits to high schools, as well as events on the evenings and weekends – stay tuned for more)

Also, still looking to get a (monthly? twice-monthly?) discussion group going around the Upping the Anti journal – email learn@equitableeducation.ca if you’re interested

And a report on this summer – the summer camp didn’t happen due to low registration and then some cancellations. Lessons learned for next time: have things set further in advance, get the word out better, and take deposits :) … did keep up on some tutoring for a couple of students, and keep your eyes open for the publication of the green jobs interview with Ben Powless online sometime soon (the booklet version of the interview is still available, by request or at Exile Infoshop)

Update – June 2009

Working on coordinating a summer camp program for ages 6-14 – please see the summer camp page.

Have released a booklet on Green Jobs featuring an interview with Mohawk activist Ben Powless. Distributed at the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair; copies are available at Exile Infoshop in Ottawa, or can arrange by email/phone. Looking to get the interview published online, stay tuned.

Workshop on Environmental Justice coming up at the Hamilton Anarchist Bookfair (June 6). Green jobs booklet will also be available there. Note: the bookfair has been linked by Hamilton Police to hate crimes; see the Bookfair’s response.

Looking to start up a ‘book club’ around Upping the Anti (UTA), an anti-capitalist/anti-oppressive/anti-imperialist twice-yearly journal of radical theory and action. Regular meetings to discuss particular stories from UTA and the issues they involve. Email or phone to get involved. Note: UTA is holding an Ottawa launch of their latest issue,  to be held the evening of Tuesday June 9 (8pm) at Exile Infoshop: the focus will be on the situation of the Algonquins of Barriere Lake, one of the stories featured in the journal.
